Effects Of Poor Sanitation On The Environment

You want to know about the effects of poor sanitation on the environment ? That way the armpit smells when you dodge taking your birth, that's the effect of poor body hygiene or poor body management so relate it same way to the environment.

When we fail to sanitize the environment properly, it fires back and we suffer the consequences.

How does sanitation affect the environment ? Inadequate sanitation, particularly in the context of urbanization, allows for sewage or waste to flow directly into streams, rivers, lakes and wetlands, affecting coastal and marine ecosystems, fouling the environment and exposing millions of children to disease, including you.

You are not save by pumping water from a borehole to drink, that water too can get contaminated when we neglect the environment so never act like you don't care!

The absence of adequate sanitation has a serious impact on health and social development, especially for children. This contamination is a major cause of diarrhoea, the second biggest killer of children in developing countries, and leads to other major diseases such as cholera, schistosomiasis, and trachoma.
Does it scare you to here that? Uh, I see. Let it scare you too to pollute the environment, let the change begin with you, start from your little end and watch it spread to the whole world.

Last time I talked about the effect of erosion on the environment and tagged it as natural disaster, it would be bad suffering natural disasters and man-made disasters too by polluting the environment. From your corner, have a rethink.

For those who still passes feces careless in bushes and pathways, you should know that Human excreta have been implicated in the transmission of many infectious diseases including cholera, typhoid, infectious hepatitis, polio, cryptosporidiosis, and ascariasis.
If you must defecate elsewhere rather than a toilet, then dig a hole for your partner and pass it into the hole! ...and make sure you cover it properly.

According to oregonlaws.org, Environmental sanitation means the art and science of applying sanitary, biological and physical science principles and knowledge to improve and control the environment and factors therein for the protection of the health and welfare of the public.

That seems to be too much grammar right? I bet you don't like complex definitions of therms, I don't prefer them either. Why not we check out another definition before we go on?

According to ajol.info environmental sanitation is the act and process of keeping the surrounding clean and safe for human habitation.

I guess that's is a more better definition in therms of simplicity, very short and easy to remember, if not for anything, maybe for examination sake.

But then it is best to have the knowledge of something than to copy lines and quote to pass interviews and exams. If you are truly passionate about the environment you should be fascinated with environmental related studies because it is only in that way that you can help keep the environment save and sustainable.
Lets see some components of environmental sanitation that is necessary to make mention of here.

In my own words, environmental sanitation involves the sanitary of the environment and should not only be an activity to be carried out but a culture that should be learned and practiced religiously, if we keep the environment neat and save then we too are by far save, so why shouldn't we care?

Environmental pollution is generally know as the introduction of harmful materials into the environment but this definition is shallow and not concise.

Effect Of Erosion On The Environment

Lets look at the different effect of erosion on the environment and review their impacts on the environment.

At first, you have to know that there are different kinds of erosion and each has a different effect on the environment but we are going to list them one after the other.
First lets list the three main types of erosion;

WIND EROSION
WATER EROSION
GRAVITY EROSION

These erosion types can be further divided especially in the case of water erosion. In water erosion we get Sheet Erosion, Splash Erosion, Gully Erosion and Rill Erosion.

Effect Of Erosion On The Environment

Effect Of Wind Erosion On The Environment - Wind erosion is the carrying away of top soil by wind, the rate at which the soil is carried away depends on the intensity of the wind. Wind erosion brings about its own Effect Of Erosion On The Environment and its severity is determined by the intensity and frequency of the wind.

Effect Of Water Erosion On The Environment - Water erosion is the washing away of top soil by water and this has different effects on the environment depending on the type of water erosion that is involved.

Under water Erosion, we have;
Sheet erosion - sheet erosion is the washing away of the thing layer of soil surface over a large area of land. The effect of sheet erosion on the environment is majorly that it washes away soil nutrients.
Rill Erosion - rill erosion creates small channels in a slope from which water flows down to a bigger channel, it also washes away the surface of the soil but do not cover a large area as sheet does yet digs dipper into the soil than sheet erosion thereby creating its own  Effect Of Erosion On The Environment and land surface.
Splash Erosion - this involves the splashing away of soil particles by rain drops.
Gully Erosion - this is the most dangerous of all erosion types, it digs many fts down into the soil with time and destroys a lot of natural and artificial resources on its way. It is the erosion type that draws most attention when ever it is about to take place or where ever it is located.
Gully erosion destroys a large area of land along its path.

  1. The Dr. W. Wesley Eckenfelder Jr. Scholarship. This program offers yearly scholarships to students majoring in environmental engineering with a focus on wastewater management. Awards are based on merit, and applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Award amounts vary, and are determined by course of study and college of attendance.
  2. The National Environmental Health Association Scholarship offers a maximum of $1000 and is available for students purshuing degrees and careers in environmental engineering. For degree program higher than bachelors degree, applicant is expected to have obtained a bachelor degree in a course related to environmental engineering. Scholarships are open to students enrolled at an EHAC accredited college or university. Applicants must be student members of the NEHA to be considered for an award.

The Switzer Fellowship is offered to exceptional environmental engineering majors who are pursuing careers in land and water conservation, environmental justice, public health, or environmental journalism. The award is highly competitive, and applicants will be judged on their academic performance and commitment to environmental problem solving. The annual award is $15,000. This is a more reason to devote your time in what you love most, as an environmentalist you are to devote time to environmental problem solving.
  4. The Annie’s Sustainable Agriculture Scholarship to students majoring in environmental engineering with a focus on promoting sustainable farming techniques. This Scholarship In Environmental Engineering is available to both undergraduate and graduate students. The annual award is $1000.

Waste To Energy Process and Importance

Have you ever thought about converting wastes to energy ? Have you though about creating any waste-to-energy facility or technique ? Have you imagined how a waste-to-energy plant or technology will reduce the amount of waste being deposited into the environment on a daily basis ?

Waste to energy is the generation of energy in the form of heat or electricity from waste materials or dumps.

HOW TO PRODUCE ENERGY FROM WASTE

There are different waste to energy technologies but we will be talking about just thermal and non-thermal waste to energy technology here.

1) THERMAL TECHNOLOGY -waste to energy technology :

Waste treatment that are conducted involving high temperatures are called Thermal treatment,
the heat generated from this Thermal Treatment can be used to generate energy.

The following are examples of Thermal Technology;

a) Depolymerization
b) Gasification
c) Pyrolysis
d) Plasma arc Gasification


Depolymerization:

Depolymerization uses thermal decomposition wherein the presence of water, organic acids are heated at high temperatures. This process is also known as HYDROUS PYROLYSIS ( the process without the use of oxygen)
This process usually takes plastics and biomass as their primary ingredients and is usually conducted at very high temperatures.

Gasification:

It is another developing process employed in waste to energy generation. It converts carbonaceous substances to carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and some amounts of hydrogen.
This process like incineration requires high temperatures to obtain results, the difference is that combustion does not occur in gasification.
Steam and/or oxygen is also used in this process where usually fossil fuels or organic substances are used.
The gas that is produced from the waste procedure is called SYNTHESIS GAS, or SYNGAS for short, and is considered as a good means of alternate energy.
SYNGAS is used for heat and electricity production.

Pyrolysis:

This is another waste to energy process used majorly in industrial processes. Pyrolysis is just like HYDROUS PYROLYSIS without the use of oxygen. Pyrolysis employs agricultural waste or organic waste from industries.

Plasma arc Gasification:

As the name implies uses plasma technologies to obtain syngas. A plasma torch is used to ionize gas and there after obtain syngas. This process generates electricity while compressing the waste.

2) NON THERMAL TECHNOLOGIES -waste to energy technology

a) Anaerobic digestion
b) Mechanical biological treatment.

Anaerobic digestion:

This is a slow process, here in, micro organisms are used to breakdown the biodegradable content. No oxygen is present during the procedure.
It is used both domestically and even commercially to tap the release of energy during the process and use it.
Anaerobic waste to energy technology is seen as a good way to reduce the green house gases from the atmosphere and also as a working replacement for fossil fuels.
The process works as a boom for developing countries for creating low energies for cooking and lighting in homes.
Biogas is used to run a gas engine and energy is created for small scale use.

Mechanical biological treatment:

This process uses domestic waste as well as industrial and commercial waste to generate products.
Waste-to-energy is an emerging innovative technology aimed at sustenance of the environment, with minimum damage to the ecosystem. With these technologies developing by day and their acceptance, increasing household and industrial setups.
Worldwide, waste to energy is seen as a development tool for emerging countries.
Waste to energy or energy from waste is a concious attempt to equalize the patterns of our planet and save our ecological cycles.
The energy generations from these technologies are small scale right now and their employment for domestic and industrial use is sparse.
However, they are seen as the energy solutions for tomorrow that are set to affect the world immensely.

The White Throated Monkey, All You Need To Know

Hey buddies, today I want to write about this awesome creature that may face extinction soon if proper care is not taken, the white throated monkeys.

It would be heartbreaking waking up a day to hear that these creatures are no more in existence, I personally will drop tears. They are too cool to be missed.

The white throated monkey was initially hunted in large numbers for its special fur but the hunters never considered how the monkey reproduced to sustain its population. A female gives birth to just an offspring before death and this alone is a serious limiting factor.

FACTS ABOUT THE WHITE THROATED MONKEYS
They exist only in two African countries, Nigeria and Benin.
Their female gives birth to just an offspring.
They are frugivores
They leave on trees in damp areas
They can be found in large groups of up to 30 members, medium group of about 5 members. There males wander alone in most cases.
Their males grow bigger than females.
They are cute.

These animals are one of the reasons why we talk about environmental sustainability. We need to find a way to sustain them so that they don't go extinct.

Currently the forests where this animals live are preserved, they are Called holy-land. Neither hunting nor logging is allowed there but Still this is not enough, the issue of a female giving birth to just an offspring before death is a threat to their population and possible existence in the future world.

I suggest these animals should be studied properly  to ascertain if there could be anyway man can help make the females deliver more just an offspring before death.

Infiltration Definition, What Does Infiltration Mean?

Infiltration Definition will eventually answer the question What Does Infiltration Mean ? what factors affect infiltration ? This article will go in details to define and explain infiltration for clear understanding.

DEFINITION OF INFILTRATION

Definition of Infiltration is same as Infiltration Definition, the two phrases are interchangeable.

In a lay mans' therms, Infiltration Definition could be said to be the passage of liquid through a permeable medium in other to filter out its impurities. Here we will be talking about Infiltration Definition with general respect to environmental water cycle.

What does infiltration mean ?

Infiltration is the process by which water on the ground surface enters the soil through sand pores during precipitation. 

When precipitation occurs, before run off, water first infiltrates into the soil. When the soil have absorbed a reasonable amount of water, the infiltration rate becomes lesser and water starts to fill up on the surface of the soil. The filling up of water on the surface of the soil is what results to surface run off in the water cycle.

I will like to explain in details how the above factors affect infiltration and why they do. I will take the points one after the other.

Water Flow Supply
This happens in the normal day to day rain we notice in our environment. When there is a sudden heavy down pour, there is little infiltration before runoff. This is because the water flow supply is very high. Also when there is a slow but steady down pour, you notice that a lot of water infiltrates into the soil before run off; that happens because the water flow supply is low.

Soil Type
The rate water infiltrates into the sandy soil is not the same rate it infiltrates into the clay soil. The sandy soil have relatively large pores compared to the clay soil which is more compact and closely packed in nature. Water infiltrates faster on loosely bound soil with large pores than it does on the closely bound soil.

Soil Coverage
Soil coverage affects infiltration, this is because before ever infiltration will take place, the water has to first of all pass through the soil covering material and this delays infiltration.
Vegetative covering affects infiltration in two ways, it delays quick infiltration but also fosters proper infiltration of water into the soil by preventing easy run off.

Topography of Slopes
The slope of an area affects how water infiltrates into the soil in such area. An area with steep slope experiences less infiltration before run off compared to an area with little or no sloping.

Soil Initial Conditions
The initial condition of soil affects infiltration. Dry soil tends to delay immediate infiltration while wet soil permits immediate infiltration if the soil is not yet saturated with water. This process can also be noticed on dry and wet cloths.

EVAPOTRANSPIRATION IN WATER CYCLE


WHAT IS THE MEANING OF EVAPOTRANSPIRATION?
Evapotranspiration in water cycle is a word that houses two similar processes; evaporation and transpiration. Transpiration takes place on plants and causes the release of water vapor from plants while Evaporation takes place on water surfaces, soil, snow and some other wet materials.

Evapotranspiration in water cycle, describes the total water removed from an area by transpiration and evaporation. It is the sum of plant transpiration and evaporation from the earth's land and ocean surfaces to the atmosphere.

EVAPOTRANSPIRATION CALCULATION
Talking about evapotranspiration calculation is talking about how to calculate evapotranspiration in an area.
It is often estimated by subtracting the total outflow for an area from the total input of water. The change in storage must be included in the calculations, unless this change is negligible.

EVAPOTRANSPIRATION RATES
The potential Evapotranspiration rate from a well-watered root zone can approximate the rate of evaporation that can occur over a large free-water surface.
The available moisture in the root zone will limit the actual Evapotranspiration rate such that, as the root zone dries out, the Evapotranspiration rate decreases.

The rate of Evapotranspiration is also a function of soil type, plant type, wind speed and temperature. That is to say that it is affected by soil type, plant type, wind speed and temperature.
Strong winds cause an increase in Evapotranspiration rates. Plant types may also dramatically affect Evapotranspiration rates. E.g an oak tree may transpire as much as 160L/day, whereas a corn plant my transpire only about 1.9L/day.

Weather parameters: Temperature, Humidity, wind speed, etc
Crop factors: Plant types
Management and environmental conditions: soil type, water availability etc
Evapotranspiration varies because of a multitude of factors some of which are listed above.
It is an important process in the water cycle because it is responsible for about 15℅ of the atmosphere's water vapor. Without that input of water vapor, clouds may never form and precipitation may never occur. Evapotranspiration may also directly affect soil moisture conditions.

The Hydrological Cycle Of The Environment

How much do you know about the Hydrological Cycle? Are you aware that it is the hydrological cycle that makes it possible for rain water that has dropped on the earth to be able to reverse back into the cloud and then goes again to return as rain fall?

The hydrological cycle just like the name implies, is a continues cyclic movement of water (hydro) between the Land , Sea and the Cloud (air).

There some core therms associated with hydrological cycle which help in explaining the process in details. The therms include;

  1. Precipitation
  2. Evaporation
  3. Transpiration
  4. Condensation
  5. Interception
  6. Infiltration
  7. Surface Runoff
  8. Water Table
Having taken note of these therms, I will like to explain them one after the other in details.

PRECIPITATION
All water released from clouds such as rain, snow, hail, sleet & snow are all in this category. The therm precipitation, is the release of water from the clouds to the earth. Precipitation as part of the hydrological cycle, sends evaporated water down to earth.

EVAPORATION
Evaporation is the escape of water molecules from the surface of water or wet material to the cloud. Evaporation occur on the water surface at a low rate but is sped up when the water is being heated. Evaporation  as part of the hydrological cycle, sends Precipitated water back to the cloud.

TRANSPIRATION
This is the loss of moisture from plants and leaves to the atmosphere. You can take a look at EVAPOTRANSPIRATION, it explains Evaporation and transpiration in details.

CONDENSATION
This is When water vapour is cooled and it turns into water droplets to form clouds. condensation is brought about by reduction in the temperature of the water vapour which turns it into liquid, on further temperature reduction, the liquid turns into ice to form snow falls.

INTERCEPTION
This is when trees or man made objects get in the way of rain reaching the ground surface. These material absolves part of the rain water.

INFILTRATION
Infiltration is the soaking of water into the soil. On a bare soil, water infiltrates the soil before surface run off. Infiltration rate varies depending on the type of soil involved. I will write on this in detail when I will write on "Soil Pore Sizes".

SURFACE RUNOFF
Water flowing across the surface of the land, whether in a channel (e.g drainage gutters) or over the land. Surface runoff can result to erosion when not properly channeled. It is indeed one of the major causes of erosion in some areas.

WATER TABLE
The level of saturated ground in the soil - it rises and falls depending on the amount of rain. At times you hear about a water logged area, this is when the water table has risen to a reasonable depth that the ground find it difficult to allow further infiltration. This leads to dirty water dumps on the surface of the earth.

A Safe Environment, A Benefit Worth Earning

This is indeed an idea born out of my love for actualizing a safe environment, not just for my own personal benefit, but for the benefit of all. You may want to know what is a safe environment meaning, it is an environment as safe as possible for you and me.

A safe environment is an environment without any form of pollution or hazard, an environment that utilize green energy and forbid pollution causing fossil fuel burning.

A safe environmet can be achieved by me and you, the little we do to keep the environment safe will in the long run be the best to be done.

At first I would like to make mention of one of the striking point on my profile here, I am an environmentalist. I started this blog out of my love for the environment and I hope and pray that this blog will be a medium to reach out to the outer world there who care less about the environment due to lack of information. I pray I would stand all odds to inform everyone of the need to keep the environment safe.

Keeping the environment safe is actually the biggest gift we can give to nature for all the goodies it had stocked for us but the happiest part of giving nature this awesome gift is that it turns around to pay us with the same coin. A safe environment is a gift from us to nature and from nature to us! so while nature goes on to entertain us with goodies of our environment, lets go ahead and make it safe.

Talking about the safety of the environment, we will also be talking about environmental hazards both natural and man-made, how they are caused, why they happen, what we can do about them and how to stay save when they eventually happen.

We would be talking about land slides, erosion causes and management, earth quakes, overflow of river banks, volcanic eruption, tsunami, and all the rest of them. Just hang on here with us, there are still a thousand of them to mention but we are going to take them all bit by bit. Don't get too surprised because you are going to hear about some environmental hazards and disasters you've not heard before, it would not be a magic show, it would be realistic.

You know some hazards are peculiar to some country or region so if you are far away from such country or region and you are a person who does not earlier have much interests on environmental hazards, it is possible you will not know about the disaster but this is Environment Go! bringing it all to your feet and to your knowledge.
